HMC Wasdale Classic Rock Meet August 2013

This weekend, saw HMC travelling to the heart of the Lake District for some classic rock climbing.

Ben, Martin, Steve, Rhiannon, Victoria and Diana were intercepted by Nat and Chris on the road to Wasdale Head. The campsite was full. It was by now getting dark and none of us fancied trying the National Trust campsite for reasons that don’t need spelling out on the internet and so we turned around and considered our options.  Given the size of our club hut (big tent), we didn’t think we’d get away with a wild camp by the side of the road so our hope’s weren’t high until we came upon the Old Post Office Campsite.

What a great campsite, only five minutes drive away from Wasdale Head but with far better facilities than the campsite there. The owners were very friendly and in future we’ll probably choose that campsite over Wasdale Head Inn.

Saturday saw the usual sprinkling of showers and cloud that you get in the lakes and we parked up at Wasdale Head and we set off up the valley aiming for Kern Knotts and then traversing over towards the Napes. Climbing as three pairs, Martin & Victoria, Ben & Diana and Steve & Rhi all enjoyed spectacular views as we climbed Needle Ridge which started right next to Napes Needle.

The climbing was easy and very rewarding as we made our way to the gendarme arête for the easy scramble finish.

After regrouping, we made our way around to Westmorland Crag to find a continuation up to the summit of Great Gable. Our initial choice of route, a loose looking severe, was quickly abandoned after the first pitch after Martin, Ben and Steve all sent loose blocks hurtling down the gully. (I believe it was Steve’s that hit the sheep – possibly Martin’s but definitely not mine.)

So we found ourselves climbing using our noses and trusting our instincts & finding our own routes through the now set in clag. I was thankful I’d decided to keep my Scarpa Manta big boots on as the rock became looser, more broken and the grass became wetter!

Clag

Feeling like victorian mountaineers we eventually arrived at the summit, had a quick chat and headed back down for hot showers, lots of delicious hot food and to be entertained by Victoria as she regaled us with tales of her diverse entrepreneurial history.

On Sunday we fancied a shorter walk in so we drove to Wallowbarrow Crag in the beautiful glaciated Duddon Valley.

Again purposefully keeping the grades down we were spoiled with dry weather. Steve, Rhi and Chris climbed the excellent Trinity Slabs while Ben & Victoria and Martin & Diana climbed Wall & Corner, all excellent low grade multi-pitch routes.

Later, Rhi & Steve climbed Digitation and Martin & Diana and Ben & Victoria climbed Trinity Slabs and speedy Martin and Diana snuck in Digitation too just before packing up (just before the heavens burst.)

We all agreed it was a fantastic weekend as we stuck into our top quality pub nosh before heading  home.

Not the Tremadog Meet!

With rain threatening to spoil the party at Eric and Ann’s, the HMC chose instead to head south for a weekend in the Peak District.

Ben and Chris, Friday’s advance party, fancied some limestone and picked out the multipitch Medusa (VS4b *) at Ravensdale for attention. Ben topped out in the rain and both he and Chris remarked on the special ambience of this route.

Stephen and Rhiannon (now in possession of the club hut and with the lock on Martin’s shed remaining intact, but only just) arrived in time for supper with Ben, Chris and Natalie in Hathersage. They can report that a Pavlova the size of a turban is available at The Scotsman’s Pack.

Saturday dawned showery but bright, and Stanage was the clear choice. Steve and Rhi decided they would climb nothing less than *** routes on Saturday and to this end Steve saw off Hollybush Crack, Flying Buttress, April Crack and the terrific Robin Hood’s Right-hand Buttress Direct (HS 4a ***) while Rhi had festive fun leading Christmas Crack (HS 4b ***) before pushing the boat out on the Stanage classic Inverted V (VS 4b ***) avoiding (because she couldn’t reach it) the “fixed” gear. What polish?

Martin and Becky arrived and had soon seen off the very same routes as outlined above in double time.

Ben and Chris had a fine time also, Ben particularly enjoying the traverse on The Little Flake Crack (VS 5a *) and Chris nominating the slither of Martello Buttress as his firm favourite of the day.

On Sunday the HMC welcomed Victoria into the fold, and by the end of play she had led her first ever two routes, including the delightful Martello Cracks (M**) – a very calm and stylish first lead. Rhi led the steep but juggy *** Heaven Crack again and Steve excelled on the (sandbag?) Byne’s Route (HS 4b **), the girls following with “some” style before going off to work on their bridging technique on Turf Crack.

One last hurrah by Martin on Verandah Wall (VS 4c, and on which he built a lovely nest) and all was done.

In summary, a weekend of great climbing based at the beautifully tranquil campsite that is North Lees – special thanks to the DJ at the function down the hill who had the audacity to play 5 more tracks after Sinatra had sung “New York, New York” . . .

Photos: None, we were too busy climbing!

Harrogate Mountaineering Club – Brimham Evening Report

Brimham Rocks Tuesday 4th June 2013

As the days draw closer to the summer solstice, and Yorkshire’s gritstone
offers up lines about as bone dry as you’ll find them, an evening at Brimham
was bound to be packed full of promise.

Ed, Dave and John and Pete saw action at Cracked Buttress, John climbing
Parallel Cracks (VS 4c) in crackin’ good style, almost jam-free, whilst
Ed made a strong lead of the Right Hand Crack (VS 4c) helped by
uncharacteristically strong language. Dave did Central Crack (VS 5a) with
Pete ably seconding, and providing industrial-sized cams for the off-width,
then finished off Parallel Cracks, though not jam-free

Cubic Block proved, as ever, to be an excellent area for warming up,
bouldering and the odd lead, while future routes such as Red Tape (E2 5b**)
and Black Chipper (E2 5b***) were sniffed out by Conor, Rob and others.

Popular ‘three star’ classics such as Birch Tree Wall (VS 4c – Ben & Rhi),
Frensis Direct (E1 5b – Martin & Steve) and Rough Wall (VS 5a – Mark & Jim)
were dispatched without fuss, alongside the likes of Thin Line (HVS 5a*) and
Maloja (Ben & Rhi VS4c**).

While Martin got spanked on Stone Wall (E1 5b**) and Steve got shredded on
yet another gritstone fist-jamming crack, the likes of Ed, Dave, and John
quietly reaquainted themselves with routes from their past…without
shedding either blood, sweat or tears.

With the award for first at the crag being won by

Conor and Pete, and last
team to the pub falling to Rob and Jim, Brimham once again proved itself to
be a firm Tuesday night favourite for HMC.
